Zamoyski

Record number of visitors to Heritage Malta sites last year

1.6 million tourists visited Heritage Malta historic sites during 2018, an increase of over 400,000 when compared to the previous year. This increase in the number of visitors also reflects on the agency’s financial income, which totalled 459,758 euro last year, this being an increase of 97,751 euro over 2017.
This was announced by Justice, Culture and Local Government Minister Owen Bonnici when he visited Hagar Qim during a tour organised for Polish students presently in Malta as part of an Erasmus project by the Helen Keller Resource Centre.
The students were told that these megalithic temples are considered among the topmost national monuments, and are inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Last year, a total of 187,083 tourists visited this significant site.
Minister Bonnici described this as the result of substantial investment in Heritage Malta’s sites and museums, enhanced marketing strategies, and competitive prices when compared to similar cultural sites in other countries.
In 2018, Heritage Malta organised, participated in, or hosted more than 260 cultural events, including lectures, heritage trails, seminars, temporary exhibitions, re-enactments, and others.
This year, eight Heritage Malta attractions, including Ħaġar Qim Temples, have been awarded with the Quality Assured Seal for Visitor Attractions by the Malta Tourism Authority. This seal is a recognised brand associated with the ability to consistently deliver a quality product.
